Privacy Policy

A little clarity on how we handle your data.

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Tellable Lesson Capture ("the extension") records language-lesson audio and uses AI to turn it into study notes — vocabulary and summaries. No account is required for local features; connecting to Tellable is optional. This policy explains what data the extension handles and where it goes.

What we process, and where it goes

• Tab audio (recording) — sent transiently to the developer-operated backend and on to Groq for transcription. Not persistently stored by our relay; processor policies apply. • Transcript text — sent transiently to the backend and on to Google (Gemini API) to generate the study note. Not persistently stored by our relay; processor policies apply. • Study notes, vocabulary, and settings — stored on your device (IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local). If you connect Tellable, vocabulary cards and source excerpts are also sent to its Cloudflare-hosted service. • Translation & language detection — run on-device with Chrome Built-in AI. Nothing is sent off your device. • Error diagnostics — the production store extension automatically sends sanitized error types, extension stack locations, version, and event metadata to Sentry for reliability. This is separate from optional usage analytics. • Screen OCR (optional) — runs on-device (Tesseract). Only language model data is downloaded; your content is not uploaded. • Anonymous usage analytics (optional) — after explicit opt-in, an anonymous random installation ID and one daily active event are sent through the developer backend to Google Analytics. Audio, transcripts, notes, vocabulary, names, email addresses, and advertising identifiers are not included.

Transcription and summarization

To transcribe and summarize a lesson, audio and transcript text pass through a backend operated by the developer (Cloudflare Workers), which acts as a stateless relay and does not store them. Processing is performed by: • Groq — speech-to-text (transcription) • Google (Gemini API) — summarization of the transcript These are used only to provide the app’s core features, and never for advertising, profiling, or sale.

On-device features

Translation, language detection, and OCR run entirely inside your browser. Selected text for translation is not sent to Tellable Lesson Capture, to Tellable, or to any third-party translation service.

How data is stored

Your notes, vocabulary, and settings are stored locally in your browser via IndexedDB (notes and vocabulary) and chrome.storage.local (settings and connection state). Data stays local except for the processing and optional synchronization described here. Connection tokens are stored locally.

Optional Tellable connection and synchronization

If you choose to connect, your email address and verification code are processed by the Tellable service and its authentication provider, Supabase, to sign you in. A connection code is also supported. The service uses your account and connection identifiers to associate devices and check Pro access. When connected, saved vocabulary, meanings, examples, learning languages, and source lesson titles and text excerpts are sent to the Tellable service hosted on Cloudflare and stored for synchronization and review. Recording audio is not synchronized. This feature is independent of usage analytics consent.

Error diagnostics

The production Chrome Web Store extension automatically reports sanitized errors to Sentry to help identify and fix faults. Reports contain error types, extension-only file paths and line/column numbers, app version, timestamps, and event identifiers. Error messages are removed; audio, transcripts, notes, vocabulary, email addresses, connection tokens, and visited page URLs are excluded from the diagnostic payload. Session replay and usage tracing are not enabled. This reporting is separate from the optional Google Analytics setting and has no in-extension opt-out. Network providers necessarily process connection metadata, such as an IP address, to receive requests; disabling default personal-data collection does not make transmission anonymous. Diagnostic retention follows the configured Sentry project retention period. Contact us with data questions.

Service providers

Data is processed by Cloudflare (backend and synchronization), Groq (transcription), Google Gemini (summarization), Supabase (optional email authentication), Google Analytics (opt-in usage measurement), and Sentry (error diagnostics). Each provider processes data under its applicable terms and retention policies. Our relay does not persist recording audio or full transcription requests; source excerpts are stored if you enable synchronization.

Optional usage analytics

Usage analytics is off until you explicitly allow it. If enabled, the extension sends one anonymous daily active event through the developer's Cloudflare Worker to Google Analytics. You can turn it off at any time in Settings.

Recording consent (important)

Tellable Lesson Capture records meeting/lesson audio. Record only with the consent of the people involved, and follow the laws in your region (some places require all parties to consent). A recording indicator is shown while recording.

Permissions we request

• tabCapture / offscreen — to capture and record the audio of your lesson tab for transcription. • storage / unlimitedStorage — to keep notes, vocabulary, and settings locally, including larger lessons. • alarms — to retry pending Tellable synchronization in the background. • sidePanel / activeTab — to provide the side-panel UI and identify the tab to record. • Content scripts on HTTP/HTTPS pages — to observe microphone/camera capture state and display capture indicators across lesson services. These indicators do not send browsing history to our servers. Host permissions allow requests to the transcription backend, Tellable API, and Sentry.

What we do NOT do

• We do not use learning content for advertising or cross-site tracking. • We do not send learning content to the analytics service. • We do not store recording audio on our servers; optional synchronization stores source text excerpts as described above. • We do not sell your data. We share data with service providers only for the purposes described in this policy. • We load no remote code — all code ships with the extension (OCR uses on-device WebAssembly, and only non-executable language data is downloaded).

Removing your data

Deleting a note or vocabulary item removes it from your device. Uninstalling the extension from chrome://extensions removes its local data; exported files remain wherever you saved them. Disconnecting Tellable stops future synchronization but does not delete previously synchronized data. Use the cloud-data deletion control in Tellable to delete synchronized data and invalidate connected devices and recovery keys. Local deletion or uninstalling alone does not delete cloud data. Contact us for assistance with account or provider-held data. Optional analytics data follows the Google Analytics property retention settings.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will note them on the store listing and update the date above.
